Part 1 Black people marched to defeat the white conqueror that was on the doorstep just to wipe out the only remaining uncolonized country with unremitting statehood. Ethiopians marched more miles than Napoleon’s advance to Russia, I read somewhere. No need to tell all what happened but the Victory of Adwa in 1896 turned the world upside down. The “savage” has not only won the war but humanized the battle at the site of the treatment of the colonial war captives; which was quite alien to the dominant anthropology that fed the brutal machinery of slavery and colonialism. Africanism was redefined…

The Oakland Institute has a history of opposition to the government of Ethiopia, consistently offering support to opposition elements in the Diaspora. It also makes no secret of its aim to try to persuade the US and international organizations to halt all aid to Ethiopia as part of its efforts to bring about government change. This is despite (or perhaps because of) the country’s long record of extensive pro-poor policies, exceptionally impressive economic development and its commitment to a green carbon-free economy. The Institute continues to make claims of “land-grabbing” and “forced displacement” despite the repeated failure of independent investigations…

The report covered several different areas of concern: Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates establishment of a military presence in Eritrea, Eritrea’s continued support for armed groups involved in regional destabilization, the question of Djibouti prisoners of war, the possible use of mining revenue to break the arms embargo and a mission to Italy in search of spare parts for helicopters, and the repeated refusal of the Eritrean…

IFAD’s Rural Development Report 2016 The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) presented a new report, “The Rural Development Report 2016: Fostering Inclusive Rural Transformation”, in Nairobi late last month. The nearly 400-page report, which includes numerous tables and figures, looks at the whole of sub-Saharan Africa and concludes that the agricultural sector is expanding but that its foundations are weak, preventing any broad-based reduction in poverty and inequality. The report demonstrates that clear government policies and investments in smallholder agriculture can make a significant difference. It sees the agricultural sector in East and Southern Africa as being transformed by…

Tesfaye Daba, Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Standing Committee of the House of People’s Representatives, in briefing the Dutch parliamentarians, reiterated Ethiopia’s uncompromising position on the importance of pro-poor and equitable development, embracing opportunities for youth in particular. This lies at the heart of Ethiopia’s development programs. He also noted that Ethiopia’s generosity in sheltering more than 800,000 refugees from…
